John & Estera Vatran

Romania

Their Journey

John and Estera Vatran are natives of Romania whose parents fled communist oppression and immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s. Acutely aware of the spiritual needs in their homeland after the collapse of communism and eager to answer the call, they felt the Lord leading them to return. In May 1994, John, Estera, and their two children (Daniela and Jonathan) left the security and comfort of 20 years in America to serve their people in post-communist Romania.

Their decision was divinely timed. The religious freedom that emerged in 1989 was beginning to fade as spiritual interest gradually gave way to materialism and secularism. Rather than rest on past successes of large evangelistic crusades, the Vatrans recognized that Romania needed a new approach—one centered on raising up indigenous leaders who could impact their nation for Christ.
